How to Find an Online Therapist

When we picture therapy, we often think of a room with a couch, a lamp, a plant but in an age of social distancing, therapy (like just about everything else in our lives) has gone virtual.

Online therapy has become more important than ever and connecting virtually is the new norm.

Though doing therapy from home is definitely different from traditional therapy there are real benefits – the convenience of no commute, clients often feel more safe and comfortable being vulnerable through a screen versus in-person and online therapy gives clients the ability to connect with therapists who may be too far geographically.

So, how do you find an online therapist?

Finding the right online therapist can often be a lengthy and challenging process and it’s hard to know where to begin. It can feel a little like dating—it involves chemistry and a set of practical logistics. Once you have decided that you are ready to find an online therapist consider these steps:

1. Identify your goals.

Are you seeking help for a specific issue? Maybe it’s a relationship issue, anxiety, or career transition. Start by making a list of what you're hoping to get out of therapy. This list will help you determine what specialties you want your therapist to have such as; relationships certifications, a specialization in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, loss, and/or work or school issues. When you interview therapists you will want to ask about their training/specializations to see if they align with your goals.

2. Determine the qualities you are looking for in a therapist.

Does gender or age matter to you. Are you looking for someone with certain qualities? Make a list of these things so you can vet the therapists for your interview.

3. Determine your budget or Insurance benefits.

Options for therapy on a budget are available if you're willing to sit down, do your research, and ask plenty of questions. Therapists typically outline their rates on their websites and usually offer a sliding scale for people who cannot afford the full price. It never hurts to ask about a sliding scale offering in your first interview!

If you have insurance, you can call your insurance provider and have them connect you to a list of their behavioral-health specialists…those people are in-network. Someone who is in-network means that they accept your insurance, so you don't have to worry about whether you have to pay out-of-pocket.

4. Research and identify therapists who could potentially align with your needs.

After deciding what you want to get out of your therapy experience, it’s time to start searching for an online therapist. To start your search for a therapist, try the following resources.

  • Ask friends and family members for recommendations. If any of your close friends or family members have attended therapy, consider reaching out to them for a recommendation. Even if you don’t plan on working with the same therapist, their mental healthcare provider may be able to give you a referral to an online therapist.

  • Ask another trusted professional for a referral. Although you don’t need a referral to start mental health treatment, asking another trusted professional, such as your primary care physician, nurse practitioner, or OBGYN, can help you jumpstart your search.

  • Use therapy databases such as Psychology Today, Psych Central, or GoodTherapy, then see if your favorite therapists see clients online.

5. Interview the therapists that interest you

When interviewing therapists be sure to ask about their availability, pricing, specialties, and also about their licensure. All mental health professionals must be licensed by the state that they practice in. Licensure laws protect patients by ensuring only those who are trained and qualified to practice psychotherapy receive a license. Before signing up for any online therapy service, take the time to find out who you’re working with, if he, she, or they are licensed to practice in your state, and the license number. Licensing protects you.

Continue interviewing until you find someone you feel comfortable with. Once you have vetted the therapists and determined a good fit it is important to talk with the therapist about what equipment you need as well as what to expect the day of the first appointment.
